PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION HANDLING, TRANSPORT AND FOOD SAFE TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES

Placentas for consumption should be treated just as you would fresh, raw meat and should be placed in your provided cooler as soon as possible within 2 hours of birth. The placenta cannot be stored in the maternity wards or any hospital fridge as per local hospital policy.

WHAT TO DO AFTER YOUR PLACENTA HAS BEEN DELIVERED AND DELAYED CORD CLAMPING HAS BEEN COMPLETED/THE CORD HAS BEEN CUT

1. The placenta will need to be double bagged and then placed in a clearly labelled, leak-proof and sealed esky with ice blocks (provided to you by Dulcie Lane for Wagga Wagga locals), to transport within 1-2 hours of birth. The staff at the hospital will bag it for you.

2. Sign the release form. This is for hospital records only and does not apply to Dulcie Lane.

4. As the placenta will rapidly deteriorate, provided to me within 4 hours following birth.

3. Sealed in your esky, the container must not be re-opened on hospital premises and must be kept on ice until refrigerated at home, or when I receive it.

The ice blocks must be replaced to keep the placenta cool if they begin to warm, especially for births that occur at night where pickup may be delayed. Have them frozen prior to arriving at the hospital. It is wise to store your ice blocks in the maternity ward freezer until they are needed. Use half to begin with and then once they begin to warm, replace with the still frozen ones. Also ask the midwives for a few bags of ice from the ice machine to help keep the placenta cool.

If I am unable to collect the placenta or you are unable to deliver to me, the placenta must be kept in the fridge and MUST BE FROZEN 48 hours after the birth to ensure it is kept fresh for encapsulation. Clients can gain access to Dulcie Lanes placenta freezer and fridge if need be.

This will be discussed at the time with the client.

5. Contact me at your earliest convenience for me to come and collect.

Ensure the placenta is correctly stored as above and in your cooler with all the provided ice bricks prior to me arriving for easy non contaminated transportation. I will meet your birth partner outside the Emergency drop off zone for quick collection.

Most hospitals have an official release form for you to sign called "Authorisation of the Release of Human Tissue to a Patient or Next of Kin". Once that paperwork is done, it’s no problem to take over care of your placenta. You should mention to your provider and/or midwife well in advance that you plan to utilise your placenta for consumption so it can be handled correctly after the birth and include it in your birth plan.

IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO TAKE HOME YOUR PLACENTA, UNLESS IT IS NEEDED FOR TESTING, WITH YOUR CONSENT, YOU ARE LEGALLY ENTITLED TO DO WHAT YOU PLEASE WITH IT.

Failure to comply with the strict food safety standards and food safe temperature guidelines, your placentas services will be rendered unsafe for consumption and/or preparation. Dulcie Lane reserves the right to cancel all booked services and a refund of services paid less $150 non refundable deposit will be issued.

COURIER TRANSPORT FOR PLACENTAS DELIVERED OUTSIDE OF WAGGA WAGGA

Dulcie Lane strives to provide each mother seeking placenta encapsulation the opportunity to have this done. If you are birthing outside of Wagga Wagga and would like to know how to still utilise our services, please read the following. If you are needing to send your placenta with a courier as you live away from Wagga Wagga, please see the section "Courier Transport".

STORAGE AND PREPARATION FOR TRAVELLING

In the months leading up to your birth, please arrange to collect your cooler from Dulcie Lane if you have someone to transport your placenta for you OR purchase our pre-approved transport pack in the online store to store your placenta in following your birth and for courier travel. This transport pack must be purchased for all placentas utilising a courier, as it ensures the placenta will stay as cold as possible as it travels. After your baby has been born follow the storage guidelines in this contract to ensure your placenta remains safe for consumption. Once your placenta is in your cooler, arrange someone to collect from the hospital and take it to your home. From there it MUST BE PLACED IN THE FREEZER. To remain safe for consumption your placenta must be frozen for transport. Once my services are complete, your preparations will be express posted back to you

WARNING
Placentas must be frozen prior to transport, packed in the pre purchased transport pack found in the online store and provided to the depot in your area AT CERTAIN TIMES to ensure same day delivery to me. Your placenta must be same day or overnight delivered.

If this is not achieved, as it has not been provided to the freight company within their drop off times, then I cannot encapsulate your placenta due to being outside food safe temperature guidelines.

DOMESTIC DELIVERIES (FOR OUR COMPLETED PLACENTA PRODUCTS)

We ship all our completed Placenta Services only to the specified areas using Australia Post Express service. Due to our products being handmade fresh, our dispatch time after purchase is 2-5 business days. You will receive an email from our us or Australia Post, once your order has been dispatched with tracking information.

Postage is dependent on the item you are purchasing and will be calculated at the checkout. Local pickup is accepted.
Express Post must be selected on all placenta products needing to be returned to you. This is to ensure they arrive to you in a timely manner.

Delivery times may be extended during busy periods and/or at the time of a promotion/sale. You will receive an email from Australia Post to notify you when your order has been dispatched which includes tracking information.

This timeframe is intended as a guideline only, and orders may take longer at times - particularly if you are in a regional area.

Once shipped the delivery of the parcel is the responsibility of our parcel carrier and not Postpartum with Dulcie Lane. We recommend you direct your order to an address where someone will be available to receive it during delivery hours. If a mobile number is provided, we offer the customer the choice to provide Australia Post authority to leave the parcel at the property if they are not home or if they would like this delivered to the local post office for collection. This is at your own risk we cannot be held responsible for any missing parcels or damaged goods upon delivery.

GENERAL POLICIES

Placenta encapsulation is the process of taking your raw placenta after birth and turning it into consumable capsules and other preparations. Your placenta is handled with the utmost respect, care, and education to give you the best product possible. I am committed to ensuring proper sanitary and safety procedures when preparing your placenta. My business adheres to strict safety, sanitation, storage, transportation, preparation guidelines, and food safety standards.

  • I am not a licensed medical professional such as a care provider or physician and I am not able to diagnose, treat or prescribe for any health condition. Services and fees are for the service of encapsulating your placenta, not for the sale of the capsules. Each woman will react to her placenta capsules in different ways. Some of the reported benefits of placenta consumption are supported by ongoing research, however these benefits have not been evaluated or approved by the Australian government or the Food and Drug Administration. It is your responsibility to determine whether using placenta capsules can be beneficial to your wellbeing postpartum

  • Call or text message me at 0447658323 after the birth to arrange a time to pick up the placenta. Please only call between 8am and 8pm and text at any time. If you are not able to contact me within 2 days of the birth and the placenta has been appropriately refrigerated/stored since the birth, please freeze the placenta until pickup. Encapsulation and capsule delivery generally take 2-3 days for a refrigerated placenta. A frozen placenta will take an additional 1-2 days so that it can be safely thawed and then prepared

  • Permission is granted for Dulcie Lane to transport your placenta for preparation and delivery of completed capsules/placenta preparations. Your placenta will be handled and encapsulated according to OSHA bloodborne pathogens universal precautions and Food Safety and Handling standards. Your placenta will be cleaned, steamed (if selected) , dehydrated and put into capsule form in a sanitary and disinfected work space. Dulcie Lane is not responsible or liable for any issues preventing provision of the services that are beyond our control (ex. car accident, placenta sent to Pathology Dept, improper storage prior to collection, etc)

  • Dulcie Lane is not a pharmacy, pharmaceutical representative, holistic practitioner, herbalist, homeopath, or medical doctor. The reported benefits of placenta encapsulation are supported by maternal experience and have not been evaluated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration Australia. Placenta Encapsulation or placentophagy is intended solely for ingestion by the mother who has birthed the placenta(s) and not for her family members, friends, or other individuals and is not guaranteed to produce specific results. The services offered are not clinical, pharmaceutical, or intended to diagnose or treat any condition. Families who choose to utilize the services take full responsibility of their own health and for researching and using the offered services. Your placenta specialist makes no guarantee as to capsule efficacy but does guarantee the highest quality of service.

  • Always speak to your care provider regarding any questions about your health, safety and well-being. Placenta services are not meant to be a replacement for medical advice, medical care or medicine. If you experience symptoms of postpartum depression, low milk supply, etc. please call your care provider to discuss your symptoms and how to feel better as well as treat any existing symptoms or potential conditions. While many women have found placenta encapsulation to be a wonderful and amazing gift, you are still encouraged to seek appropriate assistance and medical care when necessary. It is always okay to ask for help.

  • My placenta specialist can determine whether my placenta should be consumed and makes no guarantee of my personal results from the capsules. The capsules should not be taken during times of illness, such as the common cold, flu, COVID or mastitis. I understand that taking the capsules in any manner other than as labelled can have undesirable results.

  • It the clients responsibility to inform Dulcie Lane of any known bloodborne illness (es) or other health issues (such as any outlined in your health information) that could place me, my family or any others who may come in contact with your bodily fluids (specifically maternal and foetal blood as well as amniotic fluid) at risk. Your placenta is prepared in my home and failure to provide Dulcie Lane this information will be a danger to everyone's safety. Some specific sexually transmitted diseases or blood borne illnesses may preclude me from offering placenta encapsulation.

  • It is the clients responsibility to ensure your placenta is in your birth plan and to alert your midwife/nurse/Doctor/OBGYN/birth team/support person/doula that you are taking it home. Failure to do so can cause your placenta to be accidentally disposed of at your place of birth.

  • It is important to understand that there may be circumstances in which your placenta cannot be used. Significant abnormalities of the placenta may necessitate your doctor or midwife sending your placenta to Pathology for further examination. Once the placenta has been released to Pathology, I will not be able to encapsulate without an additional waiver. Other conditions, such as signs of infection in the mother during labour, may mean that consuming your placenta could be harmful to your health. I will always consult with you prior to making a choice on whether or not your placenta is viable for ingestion.

REFUNDS
In the event your placenta is unavailable to you (ex. sent to Pathology and not released) or if your placenta has been contaminated with a bacterial infection, you will be entitled to a refund minus the amount of $150 for our consultation time, esky hire, contract handling and booking consultations. If you choose to terminate this contract due to change of mind within 7 days of your estimated delivery date, then you are no longer eligible for a full refund. You will receive your payment back minus the amount of $150. This is because you have held a booking spot in your due month, preventing another potential client utilising this. If I have already taken possession of your placenta and you choose to not go forward with services, I will return your placenta to you for disposal. There will be no refund once preparation has begun, even if you choose not to take delivery of the finished capsules.

Dulcie Lane holds no responsibility for a client’s placenta once it is sent for transport with the above couriers. If it is lost, damaged, or exceeds the 24 hour period of which it is meant to be delivered, due to misadventure, unforeseen circumstances, driver loss or you haven't met the drop off times for same day delivery. You will be refunded the full amount less $150.00 if your placenta falls into any of the above categories.

If in the case that your placenta is met with misadventure, is lost, damaged, exceeds the 24 hour period of which it is meant to be delivered due to unforeseen circumstances, driver loss or you haven't met the drop off times for same day delivery, and Dulcie Lane receives your placenta from delivery, it will be assessed to see if it is still viable and safe for preparation/consumption. If Dulcie Lane deems it unsafe, your placenta will be sent back to you for correct disposal. As Dulcie Lane is not a human tissue disposal service, we reserve the right to send the placenta back to its rightful owner for correct disposal. A refund less $150 for my consultation time will be issued to you.

COVID 19 AND PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION
As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve, Dulcie Lane Placenta Encapsulation is carefully monitoring the potential impacts of the virus/pandemic and is taking extra precautions with the care of every client. This is to ensure your safety.

Dulcie Lanes practices within strict, board reviewed, safety and sanitation guidelines, including a client health questionnaire and review based on the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts (APPA) training program. The APPA training program provides meticulous education in all aspects of safety and sanitation when preparing placentas. APPA equips their students with knowledge and best practices to prevent cross-contamination and the spread of blood borne pathogens (BBP) through rigorous training in safe preparation and sanitation techniques.

The placenta can hold a high concentration of antigens during an active COVID 19 positive infection. The risk is low for reinfection as the temperatures used during placenta steaming and dehydrating are high enough to kill COVID 19. That said, as an encompassing "rule", signs and symptoms of ANY infection is a contraindication to encapsulation, COVID 19 included. To that, Dulcie Lane and APPA believe it is always the clients right to informed consent.

It should be noted that as an organization APPA does not condone preparing placentas with any signs or symptoms of infection, known or unknown, however APPA supports the clients right to informed consent and choice.

As no one person can constantly know their COVID 19 infection status, whether they are positive or negative, especially at the time of birth, Dulcie Lane has created a waiver for the client to sign, to ensure the client understands fully the risks involved when consuming their encapsulated placenta capsules and placenta preparations. The potential and risk is low, but must accept that upon receiving the pills, Dulcie Lane Placenta Encapsulation is no longer liable, including but not limited to whether the client is COVID 19 positive or negative at the time of placenta preparation.

Dulcie Lane has prepared placentas where the client did not know they had a positive COVID status, as they were asymptomatic at the time of labour and delivery and did not test positive on a Rapid Antigen Test until they returned home. By this stage, Dulcie Lane had prepared the placenta and capsules of a COVID 19 positive placenta.

DULCIE LANE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dulcie Lane commits to completing the encapsulation process within 72 hours of collection and to have them delivered back to you on or before day 5 postpartum, with the exception of placentas that are delivered via courier and frozen, as this will add a few more days processing time. Fees include the preparation and encapsulation of the placenta, preparation of add ons if you so choose, a storage container(s), written instructions for storage, usage and handling of your capsules/ preparations, esky, and ice block hire for deliveries in Wagga Wagga, and booking consultation/ any ongoing support, advice or follow up.

  • Dulcie Lane provides local pickup from your chosen place of birth and local delivery of your placenta preparations back to you upon completion in WAGGA WAGGA NSW.

  • In the event Dulcie Lane is unable to provide any placenta services due to unforeseen circumstances, illness etc your placenta will be placed in the freezer until Dulcie Lane is able to prepare accordingly. If this time exceeds 2 weeks post receiving the placenta, the client is eligible for a $150 refund for inconvenience.

  • In the event that Dulcie Lane is on planned vacation and/or leave and you wish to continue with our services, your placenta should be frozen no later than 4 hours after the birth. Upon our return your placenta will be given priority to be encapsulated as soon as possible.

  • Dulcie Lane commits to upholding the high industry standards in safety, sanitation, placenta preparation and practices, for every client. Including continuing to recertify each year with the board of the Association of Placenta Preparation Arts and continue to uphold their skills and education in placenta encapsulation.
