HOW IS YOUR PLACENTA PREPARED?

Our workspace is firstly sanitised and prepared with protective plastic covering and bluey pads. This process is done for every placenta, and PPE is replaced for every
new preparation to prevent cross contamination. As a placenta preparation specialist, and to prevent coming in contact with your blood, we wear full PPE including gloves, apron with sleeves, hair covers, hair net, goggles and

a mask.

Your placenta is then inspected for any variations including cord insertion, true knots, calcification, blood clots, odours, colour, accessory lobes, size and any variations to
the foetal and/or maternal plates.

Variations can be normal and are no cause for concern as your midwife will have flagged any to you prior to releasing your placenta. Each placenta is unique and vary from one to another through the different variations as explained above. 

Your placenta is then given a good rinse and clean with
cold running water to wash off any amniotic fluid,
remaining blood, meconium that may be present and/or any blood clots.

The umbilical cord is cut and drained of any remaining blood, and is then arranged into your desired shape as requested upon booking. It is then placed into the dehydrator to be dried.

Your placenta is then wrapped in unbleached, natural parchment paper and placed into the steamer pot. It will stay here for approximately 40 minutes until it reaches an internal temperature of 71°C or higher, and maintains this for 10 minutes checking with an internal thermometer.

When the placenta has cooled it is transferred to a glass cutting board and sliced very thinly. Your placenta slices are arranged neatly in the dehydrator.

Your placenta will be in the dehydrator for 10+ hours on a temperature of 72°C until it is "snap dry". Snap dry is where a piece of your placenta is dehydrated enough to snap clean in half, it is then dry enough to be ground up into powder. 

While your placenta is in the dehydrator, if you have opted to have a placenta tincture made, this is now prepared. A very small piece of raw placenta, after rinsing but prior to steaming is reserved and minced for this process.

150 proof alcohol, in this case Vodka, is placed in your tincture bottle along with the minced placenta. Here it stays for 6 weeks to allow the tincture to ferment and become the powerful liquid it is. 

You can opt to strain the placenta pieces out after the 6 weeks, or, keep them in the tincture for an even stronger postpartum support..

While your placenta is dehydrating, the workspace is cleaned and all disposable items disposed of. All reusable items are washed and then bleached sanitised in 12.5% sodium chlorite solution to kill any bacteria, blood borne pathogens and microscopic residual blood. Items are then air dried and stored away for the next client. 

The workspace is sanitised and cleaned with hospital grade wipes ready for the next day.

On day two of preparation the workspace is again set up with protective coverings, bluey pads and we don our PPE.

Your placenta is broken in to smaller pieces and grinded

into a powder.

The placenta powder is placed into natural, flavourless gelatin capsules for easy consumption.

As each placenta is different in shape and size, the number of capsules yielded vary from person to person. 

If you have opted to have a placenta salve made then it is prepared now.

To begin, coconut oil and apricot kernel oil are placed into the crock pot to warm and melt together. Dried herbs including lavender, plantain powder, comfrey leaf
and calendula are then placed into the pot to soak and draw out
their healing properties. Your placenta powder from 5 capsules is added and the mixture is left for
2 hours to infuse together. 

 

After 2 hours the herbs are strained from the oils and the oil returned to the pot. Vitamin E oil is added and warmed and beeswax is placed into the salve until melted. Your salve is then placed into a small tin and allowed to cool until set.

 

Your placenta capsules are placed into our jars and labelled with your name, the date and how many capsules you have created from your amazing placenta!

 

Your capsules, salve,  tincture and cord keepsake are then packaged and delivered to you (if living locally) or posted to you if you live outside of Wagga Wagga.

The Raw Method consists of the same steps that the Traditional method follows, minus the steaming process.

Each time a new placenta enters our workspace, all PPE, plastic coverings and bluey pads are set up. 

Your placenta is rinsed clean with cold water and is
laid out to prepare for slicing. It is then sliced thinly and placed into the dehydrator along with your cord
arranged in your preferred shape.

Your raw placenta slices are placed in the dehydrator at 71°C for 12+ hours. This is longer than the Traditional Preparation Method due to the raw placenta containing more blood and moisture which takes longer to dehydrate
as it was not steamed prior.

Once the placenta slices are "snap dry", they are then grinded into a powder which is placed into capsules for
you to consume.

Your capsules, salve,  tincture and cord keepsake are then packaged and delivered to you (if living locally) or posted to you if you live outside of Wagga Wagga.
